Irish female singing group Celtic Woman arrived in Newcastle yesterday just days before kicking off their Australian tour.

The foursome, which features vocalists Chloë Agnew, left, Lisa Kelly, centre back Lynn Hilary and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt, will open their tour at Newcastle Entertainment Centre tomorrow evening.

The women started rehearsing in Newcastle yesterday, fine-tuning their lighting and getting accustomed to a new drummer.

But it’s not all work and no play for the female group.

With most of them travelling without their families, they will socialise together in the various Australian cities, including Newcastle.

They try to relax before and after shows and don’t obsess about what they drink and how it will affect their voices.

‘‘We don’t over-think it. You have to be able to have a few glasses of wine and enjoy yourself,’’ Chloe said.

Máiréad added, ‘‘I’m always amazed, it’s a rock’n’roll schedule but the girls’ voices are so beautiful every night.’’

Lynn said that during a stint in America she became particularly nervous about performing and had to talk herself down from getting so worked up.

The women have sold more than 1.5million concert tickets worldwide and have become an Irish phenomenon.

Their CD Songs from the Heart was in the top 10 on the US Billboard charts earlier this year and they have arrived in Australia following their North American tour.

After the Newcastle concert the women will head to Sydney, where they are looking forward to exploring the Opera House and climbing the Harbour Bridge.
